POSITION:                                Emergency Support Specialist

PROGRAM:                               Supportive Services for Veteran Families

SUPERVISOR:                          Veterans Program Manager

STATUS:                                  Full-Time (3 Month Assignment), Non-Exempt


The goal of HomeFirst’s Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) project is to provide housing stability to homeless and at-risk veteran households in the County of Santa Clara, California. In light of the COVID-19 crisis, SSVF has increased program capacity for homelessness prevention services and Emergency Housing Assistance (EHA); the placement of homeless and at-risk Veterans in emergency housing such as hotel and motel units. This position supports in the administration of these enhanced client services.


·        Provide facility-based and community-based supportive services to program participants 

·        Conduct client screening and admission for homeless Veterans, including eligibility verification

·        Assess Veteran needs on an ongoing basis and offer empathetic listening, problem solving, information and referral, mediation, crisis intervention, and other appropriate supports

·        Facilitate on-site activities at emergency housing locations including food delivery

·        Work with program participants to maintain safety

·        Meet regularly with program participants at a frequency determined by the clients’ needs

·        Collaborate with community partners regarding support services for Veterans

·        Document, via HMIS, all client service activity within 3 business days and maintain all other case file paperwork and documentation

·        Attend and actively participate in agency/program activities and problem-solving endeavors, and contribute to open lines of communication within the team

·        Utilize supervision appropriately, while maintaining open lines of communication and providing updates on intake activity

·        Make timely and accurate decisions in emergency or crisis situations with awareness of the need for safety of all participants involved, including mandated reporting

·        Conduct program outreach as needed

·        Know and implement agency and program policies and procedures

·        Maintain professional relations and conduct

·        Assist with office-related tasks as needed

·        Attend all internal and external meetings and trainings relevant to the position

·        Other duties as assigned


Education and Experience

·        Required bachelors degree and a minimum of 6 months of relevant experience (internship/community service is an accepted form of experience)


·        High school diploma or GED and 1 year of relevant experience (intership/community service is an accepted form of experience)


Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

·        Strong verbal and written communication skills

·        Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

·        Sensitivity to Veteran issues, the needs of the homeless and those with criminal backgrounds

·        Attention to detail

·        Strong problem-solving skills

·        Desire to work with people of diverse social backgrounds and professional rank

·        Demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and the capacity to respond efficiently to program/Veteran needs

·        Ability to work independently

·        US Military Veteran is desired but not required


·        Valid CA driver license and auto insurance

·        Reliable personal vehicle

·        Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. on occasion

·        Ability to visit clients in their units, which may require walking upstairs
