HomeFirst serves more than 4,000 adults, veterans, families, and youth each year at six locations, including the Boccardo Reception Center, which is the county’s largest homeless services center. We are relentlessly focused on eliminating barriers to housing and stability for everyone we serve.


 Establish menus with guidance from the Kitchen Services Supervisor

 Prepare meals per menus and with guidance from the Kitchen Services Supervisor

 Supervise client interns, client volunteers and community volunteer groups in proper preparation and serving of meals

 Follow standard recipe and portion sizes

 Maintain cleanliness and sanitary operation of the kitchen, serving and storage areas

 Assure that food is prepared, served and stored in a safe, sanitary manner and in accordance with agency policies and procedures

 Follow approved procedures, clean and sanitize equipment, utensils, and dishes

 Maintain and count food service inventory; assist with ordering

 Notify Kitchen Services Supervisor of any supply/equipment needs or maintenance issues

 Attend and participate in food service meetings

 Contribute to improving the kitchen and food services

 Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor


Education and Experience

 High School diploma or GED

 At least two years of prior experience in institutional or mass food preparation

 Minimum 1 year of prior experience in cooking

 -  Current CA Food Handler Certificate, or able to obtain

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

 Sensitivity to the needs of homeless individuals

 Knowledge of nutrition, food and beverage, meal planning, menus, safe food handling practices and inventory control

 Has professional cooking and knife handling skills; proficient with kitchen equipment, such as meat slicer, mixer, food processor, and deep fryer

 Ability to receive CPR/First Aid certification and ServSafe FoodHandler certification

 Must have problem solving abilities and be organized

 Ability to take direction and follow oral and written instructions

 Ability to work independently with limited supervision and also in a team environment

 Ability to work with people of diverse social backgrounds and professional rank

 Demonstrates initiative, flexibility and effective response in stressful situations

 Heavy lifting is required (to lift 30 lbs., or more with assistance)

 Must be able to stand 90% of the time

 Bending, squatting, standing

 Able to work mornings, some evenings and weekends


 Desire to continually develop skills and increase knowledge

 Strong sense of accountability

 Values being part of a coordinated team

 High level of professionalism with internal and external audiences and commitment to quality service

 Valid CA driver’s license
