HomeFirst Vaccination Outreach and Education Team (VOET) is designed to provide homeless individuals at encampments, shelters, and county and community sites with education and availability of the COVID-19 vaccination. Outreach Specialists will be paired in teams to visit these sites and provide educational information regarding the benefits of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine as well as potential side effects. The Outreach Specialist will be responsible for surveying individuals about their willingness to receive the vaccination and support homeless individuals with scheduling appointments and/or transportation to receive the vaccination. The goal of this program is to educate and support homeless individuals in their options regarding the COVID-19 vaccination.
Direct Service 80%
- Provide outreach to encampments, vaccination sites, emergency shelters, and other county and community sites.
- Providing education and clear information regarding the COVID-19 vaccine's availability, side effects, and benefits.
- Engage with individuals by listening and validating any concerns or issues while providing support as needed to work through any barriers the individual is facing.
- Survey individuals on willingness or hesitancy to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
- Provide information and referral to HomeFirst Homeless Helpline and services available to the unhoused community.
- Make timely and accurate decisions in emergency or crisis situations with particular awareness of the need for the safety of all participants, staff, or volunteers involved.
- Maintain accurate and updated information regarding the COVID-19 vaccine.
- Assist those outreached in scheduling COVID-19 vaccine appointments through VHHP, primary health care provider, and other County and community sites as needed.
- Transport program participants, in an agency vehicle, to and from COVID-19 vaccination appointments.
- Weekend and after-hour support required when requested from partners and/or funders.
- Complete all appropriate data collection, documentation, and tracking of activities within three business days.
- Attend training and meetings to gain an understanding of the benefits and side effects of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
- Properly report any suspected cases of abuse.
- Attend all team meeting and supervision session
- Know and follow agency and program policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Having personal (lived experience) or professional experiences with homelessness
- Knowledge of highly utilized locations in Santa Clara County where homeless congregate and camp
- Basic knowledge of COVID-19 vaccination
- High school diploma or GED; Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field a plus
- Ability to walk long distances and on rough terrain (such as trails to creek-side encampments and high traffic areas)
- Ability to lift and carry outreach supplies (usually in a backpack)
- Understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of the homeless population
- Strong verbal and written skills; multiple languages desirable (Spanish/Vietnamese)
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks
- Ability to work with people of diverse social backgrounds and professional rank
- Demonstrated effective communication skills
- Knowledge and understanding of community resources and human services
- Initiative, flexibility, and the capacity to respond effectively in all situations
- Good collaboration skills and the ability to work independently with limited supervision
- Ability to work as part of a diverse team
- Basic computer skills, including knowledge of MS Office applications and the Internet
- Clean driving record
- Valid CA driver’s license, reliable transportation, and legally required insurance
